Fishtopia is Woodsy Woman’s resource to valuable information regarding the characteristics and habitats of fish we recommend in Wisconsin lakes.

The step-by-step instructions will guide you in selecting the type of fishing that’s right for you. As we mentioned in our other pages on this site, you’ll learn about each fish so that you are familiar with how the fish looks and how it responds to various conditions.

The fish’s habitats are introduced to gain a deeper understanding of why fish act the way they do in their environment, as well as what their feeding patterns are.

The favorable equipment that should be used when fishing is recommended so that the fish will respond to you.

Step 1

Learn about the fish characteristics and habitats, fishing equipment needed for a specific fish and tips for successful fishing by selecting the fish desired on the navigation bar.

Take time to read about each fish. When you’re finish, come back to this section to continue with each step.

…Now that you’ve learned about fish, you probably have a good idea of the fish you want to catch. Your next step is to move to the NorthernStar Learning Shanty as you will then follow these steps.

Step 2

Select fishing equipment needed for the fish you want to catch. Begin with Rods, than move on to Reels, Lines, Lures and Baits, and Hooks.

Step 3

Move on to learning about other aspects of fishing like How to Spool a Line, Fishing Nets, Tackle Box, Tool Box, Depth Finder, and How to Grid a Lake.

Step 4

At this step you’re moving on to the final process as you prepare to fish. Learn to cast and practice Catch-N-Release are areas you want to review as well as Mounting a Fish.
