Paddlers Carmel Corn

8 C. fruit-flavored round toasted oat cereal
1/2 C. packed brown sugar
6 T. margarine or butter
3 T. light corn syrup
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. baking soda

Place cereal in a 15 x 10 x 1-inch baking pan.  Set aside.  In a 1 1/2-quart saucepan combine brown sugar, margarine, corn syrup and salt.  Cook and stir over medium heat until margarine is melted and mixture comes to boiling.  Cook, without stirring, for 5 minutes more.  Remove from heat.  Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture in saucepan.  Pour over cereal; stir to coat evenly.  Place on grill and bake at 300° for 15 minutes.  Stir.  Bake 5 – 10 minutes more.  Transfer cereal to a large bowl.  Cool.  Store in a tightly covered container.
